Some of the story…

Kate Swinson’s signature aesthetic for Native Swinson is born from the delicate line work of her contemporary art practice.

The designs have grown from the memory of a childhood roaming through the natural landscape juxtaposed with Kate’s art practice and the desire to wrap a space with beautiful fine art drawing

An affinity with the nature has predetermined Kate’s need to make timeless environmentally sustainable design.

The design process begins with hand drawing, using a biro, from imagery foraged and photographed whilst out walking in the natural landscape. The detailed drawings are carefully transferred to mesh screens then hand screen printed onto wallpaper and fabric, forming raw quintessentially Australian design.

It is important to Kate that the trace of the maker and the romance of the artisan is retained in the finished print. This lends an emotional depth, communication and a visual uniqueness to the wallpapers and fabrics, placing them into the realm of artwork and making them ageless.

Native Swinson encapsulates ‘slow design’ that supports local, ethical production whilst remaining competitive in production times.

Kate has sourced organic inks to print on both the wallpaper and fabric, her papers are eco-friendly and the fabric is low impact. Environmental sustainability is the foundation of Native Swinson and Kate is continuously searching for new ways to minimise the impact on our planets people and natural resources.

Are your products ethically green?

Yes, absolutely!

We use certified eco friendly foreground inks that are water based and free of toxic chemicals, lead and other heavy metals.

Our inks are safe for our environment.

Both the inks and the base colour are lightfast.
We use two papers – A traditional 100% organic paper and a synthetic and natural blend paper. This second paper has no synthetic nasties and is made from a combination of natural pulp paper from green certified pulp forestries and recycled post-consumer waste.

How to I go about installing wallpaper?

It is not an easy task to hang wallpaper. We highly recommend using a professional wallpaper installer rather than doing it yourself. We do not replace wallpaper that has been damaged due to bad installation practices.

What are the characteristics of a handmade product?

The imperfections in a handcrafted product are what make it perfect and assure a lovely natural individuality within the design.

How do I care for my wallpaper and fabric?

All our wallpapers are wipeable and can be cleaned with a non-abrasive cloth and warm soapy water.

Our hand screened fabrics should be washed on a cold hand wash and hung inside out or in the shade to dry.

Besides wallpaper, what other products do you make?

We also whimsical artwork for children in our Store.

For your wild and free offspring you can find our Ted tents in Store too!
